Life Below

I’ve been doing a lot of freediving and spearfishing this summer, and every time I’ve gone out I end up wishing I had brought my camera gear! So, yesterday, I decided to go out specifically to grab some footage. The water was gorgeous. We are so lucky on the Outer Banks to geographically be able to receive beautiful water from the gulf stream. The first shots in the video were taken at Jennette’s pier, which is still currently undergoing construction and will be our first non-wooden pier. The wrecks in the video are just a short swim or paddle from the beach and sitting under only about 30 feet of water.

Gray’s Reef Film Festival

My documentary film, Before Too Long, has been selected to be shown in the Gray’s Reef 2010 Ocean Film Festival. I’m super excited because the student films are being judged by a panel from National Geographic! My film will air on September 19th between 7pm and 9pm at the Trustees Theater in Savannah. Can’t wait to see it on the big screen! You can read more info on the festival here and watch the film here.

Tomorrow: Life in a Day

Via Life in a Day’s Youtube channel:

Life In A Day is a historic global experiment to create a user-generated feature film shot in a single day. On July 24, you have 24 hours to capture a glimpse of your life on camera. The most compelling and distinctive footage will be edited into a feature film, produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin Macdonald.

The Camera of the Future?

Canon released their Wonder Camera concept at this years World Expo. The big part of this concept that caught my attention is that they’re claiming that there will be no need for still shots – the video quality and depth of field will be so great that you will take stills directly from video capture. I’m not too sure how I feel about that; it defeats the entire idea of photography! See for yourself on engadget

Summer Surf

We’ve had a pretty slow summer for surf on the Outer Banks so far, but the past week we had a fun little swell. Here’s a shot of my friend Torin from a couple days ago at the secret spot:

Edition29 Available for Download!

The digital magazine featuring my surf images is available for download on the iPad! Here is a short description of the app:

The ISSUE 001_THE LIFE OF SPORT tells a series of visually stunning stories on the surfing life. Surfer Matthew Schutte and his buddies take a trip to Nicaragua in search of un-crowded surf and bring back a photographic documentary of their adventures. Other visually driven stories include a documentary photo essay by photographer Chris Hannant who gives us a look at surf life on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We visit Australian surfboard shaping legend Bert Burger as he launches his surfboards here in the North American market. With over 100 pages of visual drama, audio commentaries, video and gps location mapping of stories, this issue of Edition29 is another collectable treasure for the iPad library.
